Before reunification, amateur radio was strictly regulated in the GDR. Only a few people were granted a license, and call signs were limited to Y2, Y3, Y4, Y5, Y7, and Y8. However, this changed fundamentally with German reunification on October 3, 1990.
East German radio amateurs became part of the DARC and gradually received new call signs with the prefix DL, as we know them today.
