APRS – A Journey Through History

The journey begins with its exciting origins and continues through the steady evolution of packet radio technology to today's global real-time observation. The powerful APRS Internet Service System clearly demonstrates how timeless and relevant this form of communication has remained, even in today's digital age. Let yourself be inspired by the enthusiasm for this technology that APRS offers for your hobby.

Did you know that the APRS system used worldwide has its roots in an Apple II? Bob Bruninga (WB4APR) developed the CETS program there back in 1982 to display the movements of the US Navy fleet in real time on a digital map. At the time, this was a real revolution, as position data was visualized fully automatically for the first time. It was not until 10 years later, in 1992, that it became the APRS we know today. It is fascinating that modern technology began on a computer with so little storage space!
