Did you know that the name of the PL connector (UHF connector) is basically a technical misnomer? Although it bears the official designation “Ultra High Frequency,” it is completely unsuitable for true UHF frequencies above 300 MHz. The reason for this is historical: when the connector was developed in the 1930s, anything above 30 MHz was already considered “ultra high frequency.” What was a technical sensation at the time would today be described as a “better banana plug with shielding.” Since its characteristic impedance is not precisely defined, its use with modern UHF frequencies often leads to unsightly impedance jumps – but it has retained its proud name for almost a century.
