Did you know that the Eiffel Tower would probably only exist as a pile of scrap metal today if it hadn't been repurposed as a giant antenna mast? Originally, the building permit for the Paris landmark was limited to just 20 years, after which the tower was to be demolished and scrapped in 1909. Gustave Eiffel saved his construction from the cutting torch by convincing the French military to conduct radiotelegraphic experiments from the top. This officially declared the tower an “indispensable antenna mast.”
